The sizes of the hard cover book
In the product type are parameters available to calculate the sizes of the folding scheme's per part, starting from the size of the inner book block. When using the SpeedEstimator or Customer Portal, this algorithm is applied during creation of the print sheets.
Afterwards the user can add inner print sheets. This means that the height of the spine changes. At this moment, the system is not able to calculate the new spine on the fly.
When versions are calculated, different number of pages can occur.
Also different papers for the cover or endsheets are possible.
So there are a lot of changes to the print sheets that can have an influence on the size of the parts.
The outer dimensions and weight of a hardcover book are also relevant for packaging and shipping later on. As there is a complex way of assembling the book, the weight for one book is now calculated as the sum of the weight of the individual parts.
Overview of the sizes and weight
A grid is shown with all relevant sizes and weights per part.
The system is able to calculate what the results should be according to the algorithm in the product type.
If the values do not match, they are displayed in red and made visible with a red dot.
A remark appears that there are problems.
With these values, the width, length and height of the book are calculated and displayed with a corresponding drawing. More about this later in this chapter. Also the weight for a book is shown as the sum of the weights of the parts. All these values can be found in the grid.
The drawings of the cover (1), the combined book board (2) and the jacket (3)are also available in separate tabs:
Versioning
All the versions are shown as records in the grid.
If the pages are different, the width of the spine should be adjusted. This can be done by changing the folding scheme for each version. The correct calculated value is available in the grid as columns on the right side.
Checking the sizes in the print sheet wizard
On hitting the "next" button and leaving the screen of the print sheets overview, a remark will appear if the spine values are incorrect. This is only done for product types for hard cover books.
The spine cannot be corrected automatically at the moment, operator intervention is still required here.
Calculating the dimensions of the book in detail
Book with flat spine
The width of the book is the sum of the width of the cover + hinge.
The thickness of the spine is added and also the thickness of the paper of the cover at the back and at the front (overlap).
The length is the height of the cover.
The height of the book is mainly the thickness of the book block + the thickness of the card board front and back.
The thickness of the paper of the cover, endsheets and jacket are added as well.
Should the width of the spine part be larger than this sum, then the resulting height is this value.
The weight is the sum of the weight of all the parts.
Book with round spine
All the sizes and the weight are calculated in the same way, except the width of the book.
In case of a round book the roundness of the spine should be added as well.
The roundness of the spine is calculated as the height of a circle segment (sagitta) with the length of the cord = height of the book block and the length of the segment = width of the spine.
The height of the book is always the sum as described for a book with flat spine.
Combining hard cover book and soft cover book with the same inner block
The sizes for the hard cover book are calculated as explained in the previous examples.
The soft cover book has a "normal" cover (without hinge), no cardboard and no endsheets nor a jacket.
The resulting values will only add up existing values.
