Online Licensing

Online Licensing Information

Online Licensing and the Prinect Maintenance Center

Unlike licensing with a hardware dongle, online licensing requires an active online connection to the HEIDELBERG Trust Service, as the 30-day operating license is renewed daily. For this reason, the connection between the PMC in the print shop and the HEIDELBERG PSC must be active as permanently as possible; a short-term interruption is permitted. You can find information about the status of this connection in the PMC Web UI in the "HEIDELBERG Connection" view as "Status of HEIDELBERG Connection". See HEIDELBERG Connection.

The Prinect Maintenance Center plays a special role here by establishing the connection between the installed Prinect License Server(s) and the HEIDELBERG Trust Service via the Prinect Software Center. All the information that is important for licensing passes through the PMC, so you can find out more about the licensing status here. The PMC is an important source of information, especially if errors occur in the licensing process which prevent some Prinect components from starting, for example. See also The "Licensing State" window.

IconNoteNote: If the operating license for online protection has expired, you can request an extension of the operating license in the PMC if necessary. See Button "Extend Operating License" (2). Please contact the HEIDELBERG service if necessary.

Principle of Online Licensing

The online licensing process consists of the following steps:

1.You order a license for the desired Prinect software from HEIDELBERG.

2.Before installing the Prinect License Server, you must request an installation code by sending a request email to keys@heidelberg.com. If the software order has been checked and approved, you will receive an installation code that you enter into the installation dialog when installing the Prinect License Server after having selected the option "Online protection". The installation code contains, among other things, a License Serial Number (LSN), which uniquely identifies the respective Prinect installation with regard to licensing.

3.The HEIDELBERG Trust Service activates the local License Server and the license options available here by way of the installation code.

4.Once the installation of the Prinect software is complete, the License Server connects to the local PMC, and the local PMC connects to the Prinect Software Center (PSC) via the HEIDELBERG Remote Service connection. The license activations verified by the HEIDELBERG Trust Service are transferred to the PSC and then transferred to the PMC and then to the License Server in the print shop. There, the license options are enabled "remotely", and the Prinect software can be started.

Modified, additional license options, for example those that were ordered subsequently are also activated in this way.

5.During operation of the Prinect software, the licensing status is checked at regular intervals. If a license is invalid or no longer valid, the respective product cannot be started. In this case, a certificate may exceed the validity period of 30 days because the connection to the HEIDELBERG Trust Service is interrupted, for example. In this case, you can use "Extend Operating License" in the PMC to restore the functionality after the connection has been restored. See The "Licensing State" window.

Online Licensing Details

In order to ensure online certification safely and without interruptions, the following procedures are carried out in the background:

The Prinect software is enabled on the basis of a certificate that is automatically generated and sent to the License Server after you enter the installation code.

The certificate is tied to a real or virtual hardware.

A certificate is valid for 30 days.

The certificate is renewed automatically every day. If the Internet connection to the HEIDELBERG Trust Service should fail temporarily, the existing certificate remains valid.

The local License Server verifies the validity of the certificate.

In the case of a destroyed certificate, an emergency mode is enabled, allowing further operation of the Prinect software for 72 hours.

E-mail notification of licensing issues

In License Manager, you specify at least one recipient e-mail address to which warning e-mails are sent in case of temporary certificates:

When a certificate is to expire in 20 days, an e-mail is sent for the first time.

An e-mail is sent daily if a certificate is to expire in less than 15 days.

In addition, these events are displayed in the message area of Prinect Maintenance Center. See capitulo The Message Area.
